Obituary:
The Rev. Edward Winthrop Battin, 82, Rector Emeritus of St. John’s
Episcopal Church, Concord, a resident of Penn Hall in Chambersburg died
at 11:35 PM, Monday, January 7, 2008 in the nursing center.  Born June
20, 1925 in Collingswood, NJ, he was a son of the late Henry W. and
Margaret Downing Battin.  He received a Bachelor’s Degree from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1948 and his Master of Divinity Degree
from the General Theological Seminary in New York City.  Fr. Battin was
ordained Deacon May 19, 1951, was ordained Priest December 1, 1951 and
served as Vicar of St. John’s Church, Concordville 1951-1954; and as
Rector from 1954 until his retirement July 1, 1992.  He also served as
Vicar of St. James, Green Ridge, PA from 1951 to-1954.  He was Chaplain
of Fair Acres Farm, Lima, PA 1964-to 1990.  During retirement Fr. Battin
served for fourteen months as Interim Rector of St. Stephen’s Church,
Clifton Heights.    

Fr. Battin was currently attending St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in
Shippensburg.  While serving at St. John’s, he and his wife founded the St.
John’s Episcopal Church Nursery School.  He served as Dean of the
Brandywine Deanery for several years, and was a Founding Board Member
of The Concept School in Westtown, PA.  He and his wife enjoyed and
collected antiques and artwork.  His beloved wife, Jean Cope Battin, whom
he married November 24, 1951, preceded him in death on May 25, 2002.

He is survived by two children, Kimberly Jean Battin of Chambersburg
and Christopher Weston Battin of Bowling Green, OH.  He was preceded in
death by a brother, Henry Battin.

A Requiem Eucharist and the Burial Office will be celebrated at St. John’s
Episcopal Church, 576 Concord Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342 on Saturday,
January 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will be in St. John’s Graveyard.  
Bishop Allen L. Bartlett, Jr., Father John Sorensen and Father Ted
Babcock will officiate.  A Reception in the parish hall will follow.  

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Fr. Battin to St. John’s
Episcopal Church, 576 Concord Road, Glen Mills, PA, 19342, St. Andrews
Episcopal Church, 206 East Burd Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257, or the
Philadelphia Museum of Art, P.O. Box 7646, Philadelphia, PA 19101-7646.

Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and
Crematorium, Chambersburg, PA.
